CHAPTER TWO

‘A ROAD TRIP?’ Elsa said dumbly. ‘We’re driving all the way to Valencia? But that will take...days.’

He pulled a musing face. ‘There’s some sailing involved too. But saying “road trip” has a much better ring to it than “road and sailing trip”, don’t you think? And speaking of which...’ he opened the passenger door ‘...we need to get going. We only have a little breathing space. I want the airport to be dust before they realise they’ve lost you.’

She slid into the luxurious interior, put her bag between her feet and fastened her seat belt while Santi climbed into the driver’s side. When he closed the door, the motion sent a waft of his cologne into her airwaves, a scent that was earthy and musky and made her breath catch in her throat and her abdomen clench.

‘Can’t we fly from a different airport?’ she asked in desperation. ‘Hire a small plane or, better still, take one of your planes. You know everything about the aviation industry. You can get us there undetected. We can be home by dinner.’

He sighed and pressed the start button. The engine purred gently to life. ‘Your family, Felipe and I agreed it would be better to take you home via the scenic route.’

‘But driving and sailing?’

He put the car into Reverse and swung out of the parking space. ‘The plan to bring down the cartel starts now, and we want you safe and far from the action while it happens. If the gods are smiling on us and Felipe and his men and the authorities do their jobs properly, the cartel will be history by the time we arrive in Valencia.’ He nosed the car out of the hotel’s delivery area, looked from right to left and pulled smoothly onto the road. ‘It was all supposed to happen in a few weeks but the threat to you has bought it forward.’

‘What about my family? Where have they been taken?’

‘The villa’s been turned into a fortress.’

Angry, terrified heat filled her head and she slammed her fists on her thighs. ‘Why haven’t they been moved?’

‘Because that would have tipped the cartel off,’ he answered calmly.

‘And turning the villa into a fortress didn’t do that?’

‘The estate has been heavily guarded since your father’s death. You know this. The extra security was brought in very discreetly.’

She threw him the filthiest glare she could muster before turning her face to the window and clamping her lips together.

Elsa didn’t care how heavily guarded the estate was. She didn’t care that the villa had a panic room with provisions that could keep her family protected and fed against a month-long siege. They should have been taken to a safe house in a different country. Somewhere like New Zealand.

‘Your mother told you to trust me, chiquita,’ he said, his gravelly voice suddenly soft. ‘So trust me when I say your family are safe. Nothing will happen to them. I swear.’

Her throat was too choked to answer, eyes brimming with tears that were certain to unleash if she looked at him.
